The Green Post's cafe opens in September and will feature breakfast foods and drinks. Its pub will open later in the fall.

LINCOLN SQUARE — A group behind several North Side bars is opening a pub and cafe inside the closed Lincoln Square Red Lion Pub next month.

The Green Post will open in early September at 4749 N. Rockwell St., according to a news release. It will be open 7 a.m.-2 p.m. weekdays with a variety of beverages, including coffee and tea, and breakfast foods, including pies and pastries.

The Green Post’s pub will open in late fall with an outdoor sidewalk patio, alley dining space, a custom savory pie machine, as well as three rooms and two garden spaces, according to the news release. It will regularly host craft beverage tastings, private events, world sports and more, according to the news release.

The pub’s menu will include beer, bespoke gin cocktails and food inspired by England, Ireland and Scotland that will change throughout the day but be anchored by meat and vegetable pies, according to the news release.

The Green Post team — which is also behind The Northman, the now-closed Fountainhead and Bar on Buena — said in a statement the new pub and cafe will be a “testament to the century’s old traditions and evolution of the Public House.” They hope guests enjoy the building’s historical architecture and meet friends, host meetings, play games, work remotely and watch sports matches at the pub, according to the news release.

More announcements will be posted on the Green Post’s social media pages ahead of the pub and cafe’s opening.

The Red Lion Lincoln Square — not to be confused with the English pub of the same name in Lincoln Park — closed in early 2021 due to the pandemic.

Owners Joe and Susan Heinen started volunteering at DANK Haus German American Cultural Center, serving drinks during the organization’s Neighborhood Nights.

“The Red Lion was always kind of like ‘Cheers.’ Most of the regulars are people who live in the neighborhood and just walked to the place” Joe Heinen said at the time. “This is a great way for them to still hang out and keep in touch.”
